I wrapped the silk around the ropes by first folding them into fourths lengthwise and then folding them in half. I wound thread all the way down the rope to secure the silk. Normally I use kitchen twine but…I couldn’t find it anywhere. Womp womp.
Anyway, I dunked the whole silk-wrapped rope into a five-gallon paint bucket filled with warm water then mixed up a dye bath using Procion MX Fiber Reactive Dye in Khaki. I put the rope back into the dye bath, added soda ash to make the color permanent, and left it for an hour.
The scarf was then unwrapped and run through a washing machine on a normal cycle. The finished product has a snake skin-like pattern. The khaki color isn’t as rich as I was hoping, so I’ll probably dye this scarf again with the same suji technique and orange dye. I’ll post another picture once it’s all done.
